Digging it Deeper. - Make it stand out One of the books I brought on my trip was Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde, a collection of essays and speeches by Lorde. I read a few, all of them masterful and thought-provoking but one answered every question and concern I had about my so-called “writer's freeze.” In Poetry Is Not A Luxury, Lorde describes why poetry is so vital to Black Women in particular, and how it plays an important role in our liberation. She describes the use of poetry as illumination, “for it is through poetry we give name to those ideas which until the poem, are nameless and formless.” My “writer's freeze” is something nameless and formless and I think that’s what terrifies me the most about it. Her stage presence is ethereal, yet so down to earth. The relationship she creates with her audience is like that of an imaginary friend, she understands you on a personal level yet she seems like nothing more than a figment of your mind. The use of her white dress and cape as a projector for different colored lights and images throughout the show only added to her otherworldly nature. She sounded amazing, her voice was delicate yet purposeful and each song sounded like came straight from the heart (cheesy I know). She performed a good amount of "Titanic Rising” alongside “And In The Darkness Hearts Aglow”, and both albums meshed together beautifully. This happened to me with the first season of Succession. I get a sort of secondhand anxiety when watching television shows that is very real and very tangible to me. When I watched Succession I felt like I was in the room during each board meeting, each awkward Shiv and Tom argument, and that scene when the siblings are fighting in the kitchen and Kendall bangs on the window shouting “FAMILY THERAPY”; I was there. It was real to me. I didn’t sleep properly for a week after I finished just the first season. Like every other 17-year-old girl, TikTok hype is what pushed me to pick it up in the first place. I read it over the course of a week, stopping periodically and evaluating whether or not I wanted to finish it. I found the protagonist deeply insufferable, but not in a way that was beneficial to the satire. She was just a cunt, which would be perfectly fine if she wasn’t also racist and fatphobic. When I finally finished that horrific last page and closed the book, I was filled with regret, dread, and deep deep sadness. That final scene was so horrific, Reva falling from her death during 9/11 while the protagonist watches it like a pre-recorded sermon. The protagonist experiencing a transcendent climax while watching her best friend die a ridiculously violent death. It made perpetually me nauseous. From this point forward the novel burrowed itself into the folds of my brain and never left. It made a permanent home in my mind, it consumed my thoughts, it sucked blood from my veins to fuel its deep evil. When I slept at night I tossed and turned thinking why?
